Citing a report that attributes a dramatic decline in smoking among New Hampshire teens to an increase in that state's cigarette tax, a coalition of Tennessee health groups called on the incoming state legislature to increase Tennessee's tax on cigarettes.
The report, issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, shows that smoking prevalence among New Hampshire middle school students declined from 12 percent in 2000 to six percent in 2001, and among high school students from 36 percent in 1995 to 25 percent in 2001.
