* At the University of Iowa, a star basketball guard was allowed to remain on the team and keep his full scholarship despite pleading guilty to assault of a female athlete who accused him of forcible rape. More than 3,000 students signed petitions and many protested outside the sports arena, saying Pierre Pierce got preferential treatment because he plays basketball.

Under a plea bargain arranged by a one of the state's best-known defense lawyers, he will serve no jail time, just one year of probation for "assault causing injury."
