Independent reports from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Memphis and Southwest Tennessee Community College show women faculty earn significantly less than men.
* At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a salary survey indicated women earned an average of $1,332 less than men on campus. For those tenured or on the tenure track, the difference was $1,830.
At the medical school, the difference was shocking. Women there earn $6,976 less overall, and $6,713 among those tenured or on the tenure track.
Chancellor James Moeser said the study would require careful attention, while the chair of the faculty council, Sue Estroff, said, "We have a problem, and it needs to be remedied." The report is from Black Issues in Higher Education on November 21, 2002.
* At the University of Memphis, a study showed the average salary of female professors in the college of engineering was $17,800 less than that for males, and in arts and sciences, the figure was $16,000.
