A female student at Harvard University MA has filed a complaint with the Office for Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Education over the school's new sexual assault policy that requires verification before investigation.
Students are up in arms, plastering the campus with posters, holding meetings and creating a new Coalition Against Sexual Violence over the sudden change in policy. Now a student alleging sexual assault must bring to the school's disciplinary board "sufficient corroborating evidence" of misconduct before it will investigate.
Wendy Murphy, a former sex crimes prosecutor who is a visiting scholar at the Harvard Law School, represents the anonymous student who is complaining under Title IX. She said the new policy discriminates against women, will make victims hesitate before making assault claims, and could spread to other schools.
