After a former student charged that he sexually harassed her, Dean John P. Dwyer suddenly resigned as head of the law school at the University of California-Berkeley effective this month.
Dwyer admitted having sex with the student once two years ago, but claimed it was consensual. He was considered a rising star at Berkeley, having graduated Phi Beta Kappa and been a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor before becoming dean in July 2000.
Au contraire, said the former student through her Berkeley attorney Laura Stevens. The woman claimed Dwyer assaulted her after a night of drinking with a group of law students, coming to her apartment and assaulting her after she had passed out. Her mother photographed the bruises.
After the incident, she said she tried repeatedly to seek help from the university but was rebuffed at every turn. She said she sought help from the university's health center, participating in group and individual therapy; she contacted the university's Title IX officer whose position was to ensure compliance with federal laws prohibiting harassment; she talked with three female faculty members in the law ...
