Rich and poor from all corners of the country crowded together to take part in the giant party to welcome Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva into the presidency.
Spilling out of a heady samba-driven New Years celebration, people festively draped in Brazil's green-yellow flag or Lula's Workers' Party red flag began to throng into the city's main square for the inaugural party.
Lula is due to be sworn in as Brazil's president at 1700 GMT, kicking off a huge street party starring samba king Zeca Pagodinho and Rio de Janeiro's spectacular Mangueira samba school.
The celebration has brought together native Brazilians, the very poor from the water-parched northeast, lawyers, doctors, teachers and civil service workers -- all hoping the 57-year-old leader will shake off the country's economic doldrums and corruption.
Lula, a former metal worker and union leader who was swept into power by 61 percent of the electorate in October, has promised to "transform Brazil".
Many people have traveled days to get here. Others flew in order not to miss the celebration.
