Hundreds of thousands of Brazilians began to gather by car, bus, airplane and even on foot to welcome working class hero Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva into the presidency.
Only the Pope and triumphant Brazilian football team have garnered such an outpouring of enthusiasm from the country, fed up with political leaders unable to shake widespread poverty and corruption.
Lula, 57, a former metal worker and union leader who was swept into power by 61 percent of the electorate in October, has promised to "transform Brazil".
Antonio Francisco dos Santos, a 60-year-old retired photographer, walked the 1,100 kilometers (680 miles) here from southern Sao Paulo state, pulling a cart with the bumpersticker: "Headed to Brasilia for the president's inauguration".
"I wouldn't miss the inauguration for the world," said an emotional Edmea Alves as she got off a bus arriving from central Goias state accompanied by her entire family.
"This is an historic moment, a very important time for us poorer Brazilians," she said, adding it would be the first time her family had decided not to head for the beach where many Brazilians traditionally welcome the New Year.
