POLICE are investigating claims of cruelty after four men and their dogs were allegedly seen attacking swans in the Co Armagh village of Maghery.

Officers were alerted by locals shortly after 3pm on Monday and arrived at the scene to find one injured swan.

The bird, which had been near a drain running into Lough Neagh, was taken to a vet's practice but had to be destroyed.

Police believe a second swan was also injured, although the bird could not be found.
