Although Prof Wangari Muta Maathai is known worldwide for her crusade against environmental degradation under the Green Belt Movement which she co-ordinates, locally she is known more for rubbing Kanu the wrong way than anything else.

One of the most fearless fighters for democracy and human rights, Prof Maathai was among the first Kenyans to lead a lobby to have the opposition unite in 1992 but without success.
