Budapest, January 1 (MTI) - Hungarian President Ferenc Madl, in a New Year's radio and television address, spoke of the significance of European and national reunification, and of the unity of national and European destiny.

Speaking just after midnight, the Hungarian head of state stressed that in one more year Hungary would be part of Europe in the political and economic sense, a Europe of which Hungary had been a historical and cultural part since Saint Stephen founded the nation in 1000, a Europe to which the country was linked by thousands of threads.

Madl noted that Hungary was being offered the opportunity to rise to the level of Western Europe, but whether the advantages or disadvantages would dominate depended on Hungary alone.
