Port of Spain, Trinidad: Revival of ailing regional economies, particularly in the smaller Eastern Caribbean states, was the major challenge faced by the Caribbean in 2002 - the year after the devastating terrorist attacks on the United States accentuated problems for countries highly dependent on tourism and trade with North America.

Crime was another major concern - especially for Jamaica, Guyana and Trinidad - while politics was at the centre of problems in Haiti and Venezuela.
