December; subheading as published
[This paragraph published in bold type] Nicanor Duarte Frutos, president of the Colorado Party [National Republican Association, ANR] Executive Board, disclosed yesterday that the party's leadership is in favour of President Luis Gonzalez Macchi's impeachment and the senators of his [Duarte Frutos's] faction will vote for it.
"As president of the party I endorse the impeachment and our fellow party members in the Senate will vote for it," the ANR president said yesterday.
The ANR Executive Committee met at Duarte Frutos's house yesterday morning but did not broach the impeachment issue, according to the host.
"The Executive Committee analysed the party's budget for 2003 and issues related to the recent primaries. We did not discuss the impeachment," he said.
Nicanor Duarte Frutos explained that the party does not have an institutional position concerning the impeachment, because the primaries prevented a meeting of the Executive Board to discuss the issue. However, he reiterated that, as president of the party, he endorses impeachment proceedings and so does the Executive Committee and a significant percentage of party members.
