Democratic popular organizations, political parties and the economic front in Amed [Diyarbakir] displayed harsh reaction to news claiming that Amed would be the operations centre for some 80,000 US soldiers during a possible operation against Iraq. Pointing to the fact that the use of Amed as a military base by the United States would result in Turkey being actively involved in the war, representatives of circles that expressed their views on the subject issued the warning, "There would be disaster if a nation that has only just emerged from war enters another."

Diyarbakir Democracy Platform Spokesman Edip Yasar: Deploying troops to Diyarbakir would mean drawing Turkey into war. Such a situation could necessitate the evacuation of Diyarbakir. There was intense conflict already. Such a situation is no longer desired. We do not want it to be used as a base. The possibility of the use of nuclear weapons will badly affect the region. We will resort to organizing an anti-war platform as soon as possible. We will organize anti-war meetings. Such a threat of war will probably obstruct the development of the region for many years. Thousands of people will be displaced because of a war in Iraq...

DISK [Confederation of Revolutionary Worker's Unions] Southeast Regional Representative Serdar Ekingen: We are against Diyarbakir being used to further US interests. US soldiers will not provide anything in economic terms. The Kurds will lose in this war under any circumstances.

GUNSIAD [Southeastern Industrialists and Businessmen's Association] Administrative Affairs Manager Celal Balik: Investments will be delayed and tourism will decline during war. A negative atmosphere is always maintained in Diyarbakir. It is portrayed in an unfavourable light. It would remain as the command centre of war in the eyes of the world.
