China: Noted economist Wei Jie interviewed on pros and cons of WTO membership.

In China's accession to the WTO the advantages certainly outweigh the disadvantages, Chinese economist Wei Jie has said. In an interview with party paper Renmin Ribao, Wei said: "There is no country in the world - including the developing countries - where the national economy has suffered a major blow because of its membership in the WTO, and all have achieved advances by joining the WTO." Wei warned, however, that a country needed to adopt effective strategic measures to see this. Adopting a passive strategy of trying to enjoy the benefits through non-active membership, would lead to the cons outweighing the pros. ...
