Savvy shopping can pay off even when you're buying a workhorse appliance such as a dishwasher. You can get squeaky-clean dishes and a stainless-steel finish for $400 or less, or spend two or three times that if you also want quieter operation and stylish touches such as hidden controls.
Some imports and prestige names sell for far more, but they haven't convinced us they're worth the cost.
