You can easily spend $100,000 for a kitchen remodel like the kind you see in home-decor magazines. Or you can spend a fraction of that price for a kitchen that only looks as if you splurged, thanks to an array of sleek, top-performing appliances, handsome countertops, high quality cabinets, and other custom trappings at off-the-rack prices.

Ranges are a prime example. Gas models that offer stainless trim can now cost $1,000 or less, while smoothtop electrics start at just $450. You can also get a granite countertop for the same as you'd pay for solid surfacing, as well as basic cabinets that look and perform as if they cost hundreds of dollars more.
