Complaint data obtained from the Federal Communications Commission by Consumers Union, publisher of CONSUMER REPORTS, show that AT&T Wireless had significantly more complaints than any other national wireless-phone carrier in 2003. The FCC accepts complaints but does little to resolve them. It also does not routinely publicize complaints by carrier. We had to file a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain them as part of our EscapeCellHell.Org campaign.
The FCC data help explain why AT&T earned mediocre scores in the Ratings we published in the February issue. The Ratings were based on a fall 2003 survey of subscribers to ConsumerReports.org.
