The next time state and federal officials hold a community meeting in Tallevast, they should bring along a plan for residents to receive free medical exams.

At this point, the tests may not add any useful information to an ongoing investigation of ground-water and soil contamination in the southern Manatee County neighborhood. But they would provide some much-needed reassurance -- and maybe some timely medical help -- to residents worried about their health.

This week, the people of Tallevast received the latest in a series of bad news for their community off U.S. 301 near the Sarasota County line.
