On the day the Rangers, in November 2001, announced my hiring to broadcast their games, they let fly with another little nugget: Orel Hershiser would be a special assistant to general manager John Hart. I couldn't have been more upstaged if Madonna and Britney Spears had charged the podium.
The legacy of the Rangers' lack of pitching had, by that time, reached the point of cliche. Yeah, the Rangers have a lousy pitching staff--and Paris Hilton craves attention, and Jessica Simpson thinks there's a chicken in the sea.
The hiring of Hershiser was a bold stroke. He had settled comfortably into semiretirement and had little need to breathe life into an organization with which he had never been associated. Point of fact: Hershiser was almost dealt to the Rangers...
