BACK IN THE 1950S, when my generation was introduced to seventeenth-century British history, the period covered at high speed was the reign of Charles II. It is easy to see why. The theme of the course was the rise of parliamentary democracy, but the parliamentarians during Charles' reign behaved abominably. The Popish Plot was disturbingly like the anticommunist witch hunts and black lists of the fifties, only in the late seventeenth century the victims were Catholics, and their treatment was infinitely worse than anything devised by the FBI or the Un-American Activities Committee (the Rosenbergs were executed, but no one was hanged, drawn and quartered).
