SIR: William Maley has written a letter (June 2004) which I suppose I should answer. It was good that he appended quotes from his chapter in The Howard Years, for it reminds readers of what he wrote: and what I wrote. Couldn't be better.
His letter, as was the original article, and the collection from which it came, was deformed by arguments ad hominem--which is a pity, for these are interesting issues. But your correspondent, like Ararat, never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
As to trivial pursuits, I "abandon[ing] the Fabian Society for the National Civic Council" suggests that I belong to the NCC. I actually don't know how one joins it, but I have a suspicion that at least some of its members would be distinctly underwhelmed were I to offer. No--I ...
