(From The Korea Herald)
By Lee Joo-hee The Grand National Party will elect its new leader today after a low-key race, with Rep. Park Geun-hye running well ahead of other contenders and looking a sure winner despite critics who question her toughness.
The GNP, which has 121 seats in the 299-member Assembly, will choose the new chairperson and four members of the party's supreme council.
A total of seven contenders, including Park, are running in the election, and the other six are considered to be vying for the second best and other seats, rather than challenging the former chairwoman in her reelection bid.
Park, 52, a daughter of former President Park Chung-hee, is credited for a moderate success in the April general elections, despite a wave of opposition created by the previous parliament's vote to impeach President Roh Moo-hyun, and for the dominant win over the ruling Uri Party in the June by-elections.
The contender with the highest number of votes will be named the party's leader, while four others will be appointed supreme members in the order of the number of votes received.
The party said 8,000 party members will vote at the national convention at a stadium in Jamsil, southern Seoul, with opinion polls and Internet voting making up 30 percent and 20 percent of the total, respectively.
