By Choi Soung-ah Most scholars in the United States are more lenient toward North Korea and want to see Washington take a softer stance on the hermit state, the neo-conservative professor Victor D. Cha of Georgetown University said.

Cha, an expert in Korea-U.S. relations, finds himself as an "outsider" of the academic arena ? often under fire for being a hardliner on North Korea policies.

"Most of them (his collegues) feel that the United States should probably be much more forward leaning," Cha said in a recent interview with The Korea Herald.

"As you can imagine most of the academic community tends to be more liberal, left to center, and sees a lot of North Korean actions deriving from insecurity and isolation.
