Plutonium nuclear waste could be 10 times more likely to cause cancer than was previously thought, research showed yesterday.

The danger is spelled out in a leaked report for the Government carried out by radiation experts. It is thought the revelation could lead to a rethink of the guidelines on exposure to radiation.

The West has three nuclear power stations - Hinkley A in Somerset, and Oldbury and Berkeley in South Gloucestershire - and anti-nuclear campaigners in the area said the findings will fuel their campaign.
