Women are more concerned than ever over the upkeep of their homes, and many feel ill prepared for the task, according to a nationwide survey commissioned by Sears.

The increasing number of single women buying houses, combined with widowed or divorced female homeowners, have swelled the ranks of women DIYers, the survey said. Almost 70 percent of the respondents said they consider themselves somewhat proficient in home repair.
