Although a three-year study found few gender differences overall in faculty satisfaction, 37% of women faculty at Stanford University CA reported receiving differential treatment based on gender, ranging from insensitive behavior to perceived discrimination.
Provost John Etchmendy created a committee on the status of women faculty in 2001, after presidents of nine major research universities agreed to address gender equity issues for faculty in science and engineering. "We are heartened by the progress we are making, but we still have work to do," he said. "President Hennessey and I are absolutely committed to ensuring that any needed changes will be made. The goal is simple: a community in which equity, fairness and mutual respect are a matter of course in every regard."
