Larger schools support more female athletes.(News Watch)

Using 2002-2003 data provided by the U.S. Department of Education, The Chronicle of Higher Education found that colleges and universities with major sports programs are more likely to follow gender equity guidelines by providing opportunities to female athletes than are smaller schools.

Whether it's because they may face lawsuits and public scrutiny, or because a larger program offers more chances to "find" the money to fund women, those in Division I of the NCAA are far more likely to have similar percentages of female athletes and females in the student body.

The report also found that:

* 707 schools had at least 20% fewer female athletes than female undergrads.

* 120 colleges gave female athletes at least 5% less in financial aid.

* At more than 230 schools, women's sports got less than 30% of the athletics budget.
