Apparently being a gender-sensitive, policy-abiding teacher isn't a requirement for getting tenure and promotion to full professor at the Pan American campus of University of Texas.
Last year several female students complained of Professor Mark L. Dantzker kissing and hugging them, and quizzing them about their sex lives, all of which he admitted. A campus committee found him guilty of violating the school's policy on sexual harassment and advised punishing him. Despite these sanctions, he was promoted to full professor and reportedly given a $4,000 raise.
The students are furious. Eight current and former students are now suing the campus and the criminal justice professor for sexual harassment, and asking the court to keep him at least 100 feet away from them.
University officials said his misconduct and promotion are not related. The promotion is "completely separate" from the sexual harassment case against him, according to Sandra Quintanilla, a university spokesperson.
