Fifty years ago, widely admired Dwight Eisenhower was President. Although more than 70 percent of Americans believed there were Communists in the government in Washington, doubts were growing about Senator Joe McCarthy. People were opposed to sending troops to Indochina. Almost everyone knew about the new polio vaccine, and most thought it would work. Parents worried about discipline in the schools. It was also the year the Supreme Court decided Brown v. Board of Education.
