"There is no reason for Tarkio to exist." So says Dr. Rex Campbell, rural sociologist and leading expert on small Midwestern towns. I'm sitting in his office in Columbia, Missouri, and it's my hometown upon which he has just pronounced a death sentence. He goes on to say that the sort of family agriculture I've grown up with will be gone by the end of my working life.

Tarkio is a small town located right at the corner where Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri meet. A local brochure on area history touts our county as having been the northwestern-most outpost of slavery in the U.S. Our failures in marketing go way ...
