W HY do artists paint so many self-portraits? There are probably a myriad of reasons for this, for example, state galleries offer official commissions to artists wishing to preserve their image for posterity or Nicholas Chevalier painted his features for his beloved fiancee to show her how Australia changed him.
However, the two overwhelming reasons are vanity and the availability of a free and ever-present model.
