DATES July 3-25
DISTANCE 3,395 kilometers (A prologue and 20 stages)
PARTICIPANTS 21 teams of nine riders
The front-runner
Lance Armstrong, United States/U.S. Postal Service. The odds are stacked against him (and) allegations he used steroids, which Armstrong strongly denies, don t help). Nobody has won six Tour de France titles, let alone six consecutive titles. The course change every year and is tailored to be challenging for the reigning champion. Still, Armstrong is the favorite among cycling experts. "His tenacity and his obvious physical talent make him hard to beat," says Bob Roll, commentator for Outdoor Life Network's Tour de France coverage.
The challengers
Tyler Hamilton, United States/ Phonak. Used to be Armstrong's most trusted teammate. Now is Armstrong's most capable nemesis. Sustained a broken collarbone early in the 2003 Tour and still finished fourth.
