Lawsuits alleging sexual harassment, bias and sex between faculty and students have cost the University of California at least $12 million over the last three years, according to an internal audit and report that acting general counsel Jeff Blair sent to UC regents last month.
The report details $9.3 million paid to resolve 168 cases at its 10 campuses and medical centers, plus another $3 million to resolve 18 cases at the Lawrence Livermore and Lawrence Berkeley national labs, which UC manages for the U.S. Department of Energy.
Of the 168 cases, 55 were resolved for less than $100,000 and five for more than $250,000, for an average of $55,000 per claim. Of the 18 cases at the labs, 10 were settled--six for less than $100,000 and one for $990,000.
