Documenting common knowledge, a recent report by the National Academies found that women are underrepresented in academic leadership in math and science not because they are less capable than men, but due to "unintentional biases and outdated institutional structures."

Dr. Donna Shalala, president of the University of Miami and chair of the panel producing the report, called it "a call to action" to remedy a "troubling and embarrassing" situation. Among its recommendations:

* Trustees, presidents and provosts must lead the change in their school's culture to recruit, retain and promote women.

* Deans, department heads and tenured faculty must commit to minimize the effects of bias in recruiting, hiring, ...
