In the mid-sixteenth century investigations by the Roman Holy Office into contacts among sometime associates of Juan de Valdes extended beyond reconstruction of events at Naples earlier in the century. The network of such contacts was rightly suspected to embrace many of those who had been of Pole's household at Viterbo or had otherwise been seen as belonging to the ranks of the 'spirituali'.
