INDEPENDENCE is not just about looking at the past. It is about appreciating the present and preparing for the future. The good that has been done over the years must not be undone, not by any individual or group.
Ours is a society that cherishes peace and which is against communist terrorism and insurgency. Violence and terrorism are anathema to the serenity and tranquillity of Malaysian society.
Independence is not just about freedom from colonialism. It is also about the protection and promotion of individual rights and community rights. Real freedom is when everyone is equal before the law. Real freedom is when the whole range of hitherto basic rights and newly emerging rights are allowed to be achieved.
Ways of doing things which may have been successful in solving the problems of yesterday may no longer be relevant for solving today's problems and tomorrow's challenges.
