THE definition of world peace may be off the radar with George Bush and Tony Blair running as nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize 2004. In their contest, war is a necessary evil in achieving peace.

But in these trying times, we need not only leaders who can shape a world population's mindset to embrace peace, but also a group of activists who champion the cause for the goodwill of everyone.

One such activist, Shirin Ebadi - the first Muslim woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 - understands that killing is not an act of peace, and has campaigned to protect human rights at grassroots level.
