I REFER to the letter by Consumers Association of Penang president S.M. Mohamed Idris on "sugar-free" labelling of food (NST, Feb 27), which has drawn comment from the Health Ministry and the Malaysian Medical Association.

The new regulations were gazetted one year ago and became effective this month. MMA president Datuk Dr N. Arumugam suggested that the Health Ministry look into the regulations closely.

The ministry's Public Health Development Food Quality Control Division director said last week that consumers should be educated on food labels.
