PRAGUE, July 1 (CTK) - The office of ombudsman, citizens' rights public protector, might gain more powers in protecting people staying in prisons, homes for mentally handicapped people and similar institutions, under a new bill which the outgoing cabinet approved at its meeting late on Wednesday.
The bill, which extends the ombudsman's powers in this respect, will now be submitted to the Chamber of Deputies for discussion.
Up to now, Ombudsman Office workers have been able to visit, for example, custody prisons either on their own initiative or in reaction to a complaint. The bill enables their access to further facilities such as homes for mentally-handicapped patients.
Moreover, their inspection visits should become systematic and preventive in the facilities where people with restricted personal freedom live.
