UK telco BT announced on Tuesday that it intends to block premium rate phone numbers used by modem hijackers. Up to 70 per cent of internet-related complaints received by Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services, which regulates premium rate services in the UK, relate to calls placed to premium rate lines by PCs infected by auto-dial software. The software, which causes modems to disconnect from their internet and dial up premium rate services, is often downloaded and installed without the user's knowledge or informed consent. A BT spokesman, quoted by Silicon.com, said: "We need to minimise the number of customers being affected as quickly as we can and we can't allow any more of our customers to fall victim while the sometimes lengthy investigative process gets underway." Although BT receives a portion of the revenues obtained through modem hijacking over its network, the bulk of the funds are taken by the operators of premium rate lines.
