SEOUL, July 1 Asia Pulse - South Korea's trade surplus rose to US$3.24 billion in June, the largest monthly amount in more than five years, thanks to robust exports to China and the European Union, the commerce ministry said Thursday.
The country's customs-cleared exports jumped 39.6 per cent from a month earlier to $21.8 billion, while imports rose 38.6 per cent to $18.6 billion, according to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy.
Exports to the European Union soared 53.6 per cent, followed by those to China with 52.2 per cent), the United States 39.4 per cent and Japan 31.4 per cent, it said in a statement.
The cumulative trade surplus in the first half amounted to .51 billion, up slightly higher from $14.99 billion in the whole year of 2003. The comparative figures for exports and imports reached $218.6 billion and $18.61 billion, respectively.
