JAKARTA, July 1 Asia Pulse - Indonesia prefers to conduct coordinated rather than joint patrols with Malaysia and Singapore in ensuring security in the Malacca Straits, Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirajuda said.
"We (the three countries) have our own sea territories in the straits. So we had better carry out coordinated patrols in our respective territories," Hassan said when asked about the outcome of a meeting he had held with his Malaysian counterpart, Syed Hamid Albar, ahead of the opening of the 37th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM) Indonesia is hosting from June 29 to 30.
Later, the ASEAN foreign ministers will meet with the foreign ministers of China, Japan, and South Korea on the morning of July 1, while in the afternoon, they will meet their counterparts from various other countries in the context of a Post-Ministerial Conference.
On July 2, Indonesia will host and chair the 11th meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). Twenty-three Asia Pacific countries are participating in the ARF.
