SEOUL, July 1 Asia Pulse - South Korea's self-sufficiency in rice is forecast to fall to 93.1 per cent this year, the lowest in eight years, reflecting last year's bad crop and South Koreans' shift in diet, according to a government report Thursday.
The report, presented to the National Assembly, attributed the drop to bad weather last year, including the aftermath of Typhoon Maemi, saying that rice production was 4.45 million tons, the lowest in 23 years.
Besides this, South Koreans are consuming more bread, fat and protein as a way of sustaining themselves, influenced by Western lifestyles.
The rice self-sufficiency rate measures the portion of rice consumed in a nation that is produced domestically.
The rate dropped to 97.5 per cent last year after rising for three years in a row since 2002, when it reached 102.9 per cent.
"A self-sufficiency rate below 100 does not mean we lack rice. We have enough stockpiles of rice, including one carried over from last year," an agriculture official said.
