The Financial Ombudsman Service has reported a 33% increase in travel insurance complaints and a 19% increase overall, according to its annual review for the year ended 31 March 2004.
In the general insurance sector, travel insurance saw the most marked rise, meaning it now accounts for 15% (1453 in total) of all insurance complaints in the sector. The FOS said an increase had been expected because of the increase in travel restrictions arising from terrorism and Sars; however, in the event, most of the growth resulted from routine claims matters.
