WHILE President Macapagal-Arroyo basked in the glory of her poll victory, her defeated challenger Fernando Poe Jr. shunned the public eye yesterday and sought solace in his Greenhills, San Juan, home.
According to aides who did not want to be named, the actor stayed indoors for most of the day as whole households around the country watched the television coverage of Ms Arroyo's inaugural in Manila and Cebu City.
No details of Poe's activities were volunteered, except a tentative plan to meet with his political leaders last night. Also, the aides said, Poe might have tried to catch some sleep, as he was up practically up all night Tuesday, the eve of the President's oath-taking.
Poe conferred with his leaders on Tuesday evening in a Greenhills restaurant. Hours earlier at the Mabuhay Rotonda in Quezon City, about 1,800 supporters of his Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino, protesting the election results as promulgated by Congress, were dispersed by antiriot police with water cannons, tear gas and truncheons.
"I left at 1:30 a.m. (Wednesday) and they were still there [at the meeting]," said actor Rez Cortez, head of the coordinating center of various Poe volunteer groups. He said Poe had been "agitated" by the violent dispersal of the rally.
