CEBU CITY-Seven demonstrators were slightly injured yesterday when protesters battled police with stones and plastic chairs as they tried to gatecrash the inauguration of President Macapagal-Arroyo.
The clash occurred at around 11 a.m.-an hour before Ms Arroyo formally took her oath of office-when some 100 members of the militant Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) tried to march to the inauguration site in the Capitol 2 km away.
The demonstrators were no match again for the over 100 anti-riot policemen who, armed with batons and shields, blocked their path.
Paul Rodriguez, who heads Bayan's Central Visayas chapter, and Vida Arcamo, secretary general of Gabriela, tried to negotiate with the police so that they could hold a rally near the Capitol.
But regional police operations director Senior Supt. Ronald Roderos, who headed the blocking force, told the militants to head back to the downtown area.
