RAIN or shine, the third and final leg of the prestigious Asian Athletics Grand Prix fires off today featuring the continent's best-including the country's finest-in 15 choice events at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Some 200 athletes from powerhouse countries like China, Japan, India, Korea, Singapore, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Saudi Arabia are mixing it up for cash prizes ranging from $500 to $2,000 starting at 2 p.m.
Among the much awaited event is the women's long jump where Lerma Bulauitan-Gabito hopes to finally nail the gold medal against her Chinese and Indian rivals, who beat her in the previous legs in Bangkok and Colombo.
Gabito, already assured of an Olympic stint in Athens, showed she's worthy of the stint after surpassing the Olympic qualifying mark in winning the long jump bronze in the second leg of the Grand Prix held in Sri Lanka last weekend.
The 29-year-old Gabito jumped to a distance of 6.56 meters on her fourth try to match the RP record of Elma Muros-Posadas and beat the Olympic Grade B mark by a centimeter. She won $1,000 for her feat.
