By Joo Sang-min One of the measures agreed by the Koreas to avoid accidental naval clashes along the disputed western sea border failed to work yesterday as South Korean naval vessels sent radio signals to a stray fishing vessel but failed to get any response.
A North Korean fishing boat briefly crossed the western sea border with South Korea early in the morning in foggy weather, an official with the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
The two-ton-class North Korean vessel, with three people aboard, sailed about 500 meters into southern waters around 7:15 a.m. while drifting because of the fog and low visibility, but retreated about 45 minutes later after two South Korean Navy ships sped to the scene and gave the boat a compass to get its bearings.
Soon after the fishing boat intruded across the poorly drawn Northern Limit Line, the South sent it three signals via a standard radio frequency but did not receive a response, said Col. Kim Sung-ok, a spokesman at the office. The Koreas successfully traded naval signals on June 14 when ...
