Unification Minister Chung Dong-young Nine years after he gave up a career as a celebrated TV reporter to enter politics, former Uri Party Chairman Chung Dong-young has grabbed the prized post of Unification Minister.
Born in 1953 in Sunchang, South Jeolla Province, Chung entered Seoul National University in 1972 and participated in the student demonstrations against the late President Park Chung-hee's dictatorship, as many other lawmakers did, and was in prison in 1974 for violating the National Security Law.
After graduation, he joined Munhwa Broadcasting Company, one of the three major local broadcasters along with Korean Broadcasting System and Seoul Broadcasting System, as a TV newsman. Chung established his career on the political desk from 1980 onwards and covered politics for over 10 years, making a name for himself and becoming in 1989 the network's Los Angeles correspondent.
