WASHINGTON -- The largest-ever national study of the treatment of twin-totwin transfusion syndrome will compare amnioreduction with selective fetoscopic laser photocoagulation.
Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the $6.7 million clinical trial, launched in March, will be conducted at 12 centers across the country, Dr. Timothy Crombleholme said during the Third World Congress on Controversies in obstetrics, Gynecology, and Infertility.
Dr. Crombleholme, the study's lead investigator and a pediatric and fetal surgeon at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, hopes to recruit at least 150 participants over the course of the 5-year project.
Dr. Crombleholme encouraged obstetricians to refer any severe cases of twinto-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) to one of the participating centers. Women referred to the trial must be at least 18 years old, diagnosed with TTTS before 22 weeks' gestation, and undergo randomization to one of the ...
